Toru Dutt

Toru Dutt, whose birth name was Tarulata Dutt, was born on 4 March 1856 in Calcutta, Bengal, into the prominent Dutt family of Rambagan. Her father, Govin Chunder Dutt, was a writer and public official, while her family had strong literary interests. The family converted to Christianity in the 1860s, while Toru's literary imagination remained deeply connected with Bengali culture and the stories of India's classical traditions.

Toru and her siblings were educated largely at home. She became proficient in Bengali, English, French, and Sanskrit, an unusual linguistic accomplishment for a young Indian woman of her period. In 1869, after the death of her brother Abju, the family travelled to Europe. Toru studied French in France and later continued her education in England. Between 1871 and 1873, while living in Cambridge, she attended the Higher Lectures for Women associated with the University of Cambridge.

Her years in Europe had a major influence on her literary development. She read extensively in French and English literature and began translating French poetry into English. After returning to Calcutta in 1873, she also undertook an intensive study of Sanskrit, using Indian literary and mythological traditions as important sources for her own poetry.

Her first major publication was A Sheaf Gleaned in French Fields, a collection of English translations of French poetry, first published in 1876. The volume contained more than 300 translated poems and demonstrated her ability to work creatively between French and English literary traditions. The book later attracted favorable attention in Britain and France.

Dutt's most celebrated work is Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan. The collection contains poems based on stories from Sanskrit literature, including episodes associated with the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Puranic traditions. She combined Indian themes with English poetic forms, creating a distinctive form of Indian English poetry. The collection was published posthumously in 1882.

Toru Dutt also wrote fiction in both English and French. Her unfinished English novel Bianca, or The Young Spanish Maiden was published after her death, while Le Journal de Mademoiselle d'Arvers, written in French, was published in Paris in 1879. The latter is recognized as an early and significant example of a novel written in French by an Indian writer.

Her poetry frequently explored memory, loneliness, grief, nature, cultural identity, patriotism, and nostalgia. Personal loss strongly affected her writing: her brother Abju died young, followed by the death of her beloved sister Aru in 1874. These experiences contributed to the elegiac quality found in several of her poems.

Toru Dutt's literary achievement was remarkable considering the brevity of her life. She died in Calcutta on 30 August 1877, aged only 21, after suffering from tuberculosis. Much of her literary reputation developed after her death, particularly through the publication of Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan. Today, she is studied as an important pioneer of Indian English literature and as a writer who connected Bengali, Sanskrit, French, and English literary traditions.
