Subhadra Kumari Chauhan

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan (1904–1948) was an Indian Hindi poet and writer best known for her patriotic poetry and historical poems. Her famous poem “Jhansi Ki Rani” about Rani Lakshmibai became one of the best-known works of Hindi literature. Early Life

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was born on 16 August 1904 in Nihalpur village near Allahabad, British India. She developed an interest in poetry from an early age and began writing while she was still young.

She later married Thakur Lakshman Singh Chauhan, and the couple became involved in India's national movement.

Literary Career

Chauhan wrote primarily in Hindi and became known for her accessible and emotionally powerful style. Her poetry often focused on patriotism, historical figures, social issues, and the experiences of ordinary people.

Her most famous poem, “Jhansi Ki Rani,” celebrates Rani Lakshmibai's resistance during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The poem's memorable narrative style helped make it widely known among Hindi-speaking readers.

In addition to poetry, Chauhan wrote short stories. Her literary work addressed subjects including women's lives, social conditions, and family relationships.

Role in the Freedom Movement

Chauhan participated in India's independence movement and joined the Non-Cooperation Movement associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Her political activities led to her arrest, and she became one of the women associated with India's nationalist struggle.

She was also involved in public and political life in the Central Provinces and Berar and served as a member of the legislative assembly.
