Sean Connery

Sean Connery was born Thomas Sean Connery on 25 August 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Before becoming an actor, he worked at various jobs and served in the Royal Navy. He also participated in bodybuilding competitions, an experience that helped him obtain early modeling and acting opportunities.

Connery began his acting career with small roles in British films and television productions during the 1950s. His early performances gradually brought him wider attention, and he eventually gained the opportunity that would transform his career: playing James Bond.

In 1962, Connery starred as James Bond in Dr. No, the first film in the official James Bond series. He subsequently played Bond in From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever and, outside the official Eon series, Never Say Never Again. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences identifies Connery as the first actor to play James Bond on the big screen.

The Bond films made Connery an international film star. His performances established many of the characteristics associated with the cinematic version of the character. His final film in the official Bond series was Diamonds Are Forever in 1971.

Connery continued to build a diverse career after his Bond years. He appeared in films including The Man Who Would Be King, The Name of the Rose, Highlander, The Untouchables, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October and The Rock.

In 1988, Connery won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Jim Malone in The Untouchables. The Academy's official records list him as the winner in the category at the 60th Academy Awards.

His later career included major productions such as The Hunt for Red October (1990), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Rock (1996) and Entrapment (1999). He became known for portraying a wide range of characters beyond James Bond.

Connery received numerous honors during his career. Among them was a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2000, recognizing his contribution to drama. He remained closely associated with Scotland throughout his life and was widely recognized as one of the country's most internationally prominent actors.

Sean Connery died on 31 October 2020 in Nassau, Bahamas, at the age of 90. His career spanned more than five decades, and his portrayal of James Bond became a defining part of twentieth-century popular cinema.
