Rajendra Prasad
Dr. Rajendra Prasad (1884–1963) was an Indian lawyer, scholar, journalist, freedom fighter, and politician who became the first President of India. He served as President from January 26, 1950, to May 13, 1962, making him the only Indian president to serve two full terms. He was also president of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Constitution of India.

Rajendra Prasad was born on December 3, 1884, in Ziradei, Bihar, then part of British India. He was an outstanding student and pursued higher education at the University of Calcutta. He later trained as a lawyer and established a successful legal career before becoming deeply involved in India's independence movement.
Prasad joined the Indian National Congress in 1911 and became an important leader from Bihar. He was closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi and participated in the Indian independence movement. His involvement in nationalist activities gradually led him away from his legal career and toward public service.
He played an important role in the political and social movements of the independence era and became a prominent Congress leader. His work included involvement in the Bihari Students Conference, which was established in 1906 and became an important organization in the development of political awareness among students in Bihar.
After India became independent in 1947, Prasad was elected President of the Constituent Assembly, which was responsible for drafting and adopting the Constitution of India. Under his presidency, the Assembly conducted extensive debates before adopting the Constitution on November 26, 1949.
On January 26, 1950, when India became a republic, Rajendra Prasad was elected the country's first President. He served two consecutive terms, from 1950 to 1962. During his presidency, he was known for maintaining a relatively simple personal lifestyle while carrying out the constitutional responsibilities of the office.
Prasad received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. After completing his second presidential term in 1962, he retired from active political life and spent his later years at Sadaqat Ashram in Patna, Bihar. He died on February 28, 1963.
Rajendra Prasad remains an important figure in India's independence movement and the country's early constitutional history. His roles as freedom activist, Constituent Assembly president, and first President of India connected the independence struggle with the establishment of the Republic of India.
