Early Life and Education

Qurratulain Hyder was born on 20 January 1927 in Aligarh, British India. She came from a literary family. Her father, Sajjad Haidar Yildrim, was a writer, and her mother, Nazar Sajjad Hyder, was also a prominent Urdu writer.

Hyder developed an interest in literature from an early age. She studied at Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow and later attended the University of Lucknow.

Literary Career

Hyder began publishing her literary work at a young age and eventually established herself as a novelist and short-story writer. Her writing was distinguished by its historical breadth, complex narrative structures, and engagement with changing South Asian society.

Her most famous novel is Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire), first published in 1959. The novel traces several characters and historical periods across centuries of South Asian history, connecting ancient India with the political and social transformations of the modern era.
