Nabaneeta Dev Sen

Nabaneeta Dev Sen was born on 13 January 1938 in Kolkata, into a literary family. Her parents, Narendra Dev and Radharani Devi, were both poets, with her mother also writing under the name Aparajita Devi. According to the Sahitya Akademi, Rabindranath Tagore gave her the name “Nabaneeta.” She began writing at a very young age, with her early poems and prose appearing in a school magazine when she was seven.

She studied English literature at Presidency College in Kolkata and was among the first students of the Department of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University. She completed her master's degree there in 1958. She later pursued higher studies in the United States, including a master's degree at Harvard University and doctoral research at Indiana University. She also undertook postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, and Cambridge.

Her literary career began with poetry. Her first collection, Pratham Pratyay, was published in 1959. Over the following decades, she wrote extensively in Bengali, producing poetry, novels, short stories, plays, essays, travelogues, memoir-style writing, translations, literary criticism, and children's books. Her published works number more than 80, reflecting the exceptional range of her literary career.

Her first novel, Ami Anupam, appeared in 1976. Other notable works include Karuna Tomar Kon Path Diye, Bama-bodhini, Sita Theke Shuru, Nati Nabanita, Truck Bahoney McMahoney, and Monsieur Hulor Holiday. Her writing frequently explored women's experiences, family relationships, social change, identity, travel, and reinterpretations of stories from Indian epics.

Dev Sen also established an important academic career. She taught Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University and became an internationally recognized scholar of literature. Her academic interests included comparative literature, mythology, women's writing, and literary interpretation. She also participated in international literary and academic events and held visiting and fellowship positions outside India.

She was particularly known for writing about women and for reinterpreting traditional literary and mythological narratives from women's perspectives. Her writings on figures such as Sita contributed to discussions of gender, literature, and the representation of women in epic traditions. She also founded and led Soi, a women's writers' association in West Bengal.

Dev Sen received numerous literary honors. She won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1999 for Naba-Nita, classified by the Sahitya Akademi as prose-poetry. She received the Padma Shri in 2000 and several other national and literary honors during her career.

Nabaneeta Dev Sen died in Kolkata on 7 November 2019 at the age of 81. Her legacy encompasses both creative literature and academic scholarship, and her work remains significant in Bengali literature, comparative literature, women's writing, and children's literature.
