Mrinalini Sarabhai
**Mrinalini Sarabhai (1918–2016)** was a renowned Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher who made major contributions to Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. Early Life and Education
Mrinalini Sarabhai was born as Mrinalini Swaminadhan on 11 May 1918 in Madras, British India. Her mother, Ammu Swaminathan, was a social worker, independence activist, and later parliamentarian, while her father, Subbarama Swaminathan, was a prominent lawyer. Mrinalini grew up in an intellectually active family and was exposed to different cultural traditions from an early age.
She spent part of her childhood in Switzerland, where she encountered the Dalcroze method of movement. She later studied at Santiniketan under Rabindranath Tagore, an experience that helped strengthen her interest in the performing arts. She also briefly studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in the United States.
Training in Indian Classical Dance
After returning to India, Sarabhai underwent rigorous training in Bharatanatyam under renowned gurus including Meenakshisundaram Pillai and other teachers. She also trained in Kathakali under Guru Kunchu Kurup. Her training in these traditions provided the foundation for her later career as a dancer and choreographer.
Darpana Academy
In Ahmedabad, Mrinalini Sarabhai established the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, which became an important institution for training in dance, drama, music, and puppetry. Through Darpana, she trained generations of performers and developed new approaches to Indian classical dance and choreography.
Sarabhai also used dance and theatre to explore social themes. Her choreographic work extended beyond purely traditional subjects and addressed issues connected with society and human life, helping demonstrate how classical performance could engage with contemporary concerns.
Marriage and Family
In 1942, Mrinalini married physicist Vikram Sarabhai, who later became an important figure in India's space programme. They had two children, Mallika Sarabhai and Kartikeya Sarabhai.
Awards and Recognition
Mrinalini Sarabhai received numerous national and international honors for her contribution to dance. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1965 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1994, recognizing her eminence in the performing arts.
She also received international recognition, including a medal and diploma from the Archives Internationales de la Danse in Paris and a gold medal from the Mexican government for her choreography.
Legacy and Death
Sarabhai remained closely associated with Darpana and continued to influence Indian classical dance through teaching, choreography, writing, and institution-building. Her autobiography is titled Mrinalini Sarabhai: The Voice of the Heart.
Mrinalini Sarabhai died in Ahmedabad on 21 January 2016, aged 97. Her work continues to be associated with the development, teaching, and modernization of Indian classical dance.
