Early Life
Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born on 25 January 1824 in Sagardari village in Jessore district, Bengal Presidency, British India. The village is now in Keshabpur Upazila of Jashore District, Bangladesh.
His father, Rajnarayan Dutt, was a lawyer, and his mother was Jahnabi Devi.
Madhusudan grew up in an educated family and showed an early interest in literature, languages, and poetry.
Education
Madhusudan received his early education in his hometown before moving to Calcutta. He studied at Hindu College, where he became deeply influenced by English literature and European intellectual thought.

Conversion and Name
In 1843, Madhusudan converted to Christianity and adopted the name Michael Madhusudan Dutt.

Pioneer of Bengali Blank Verse
One of Madhusudan's most important contributions was his introduction of blank verse, known as Amitrakshar Chhanda, into Bengali poetry.
His use of unrhymed verse allowed Bengali poets greater flexibility in expressing complex ideas and dramatic narratives.
His experiments with poetic form helped move Bengali literature beyond many of the traditional conventions of his time.
Meghnad Badh Kavya
Madhusudan's masterpiece, Meghnad Badh Kavya, was published in two parts in 1861.
The epic is based on characters and events from the Ramayana, but Madhusudan presents the story from a distinctive perspective. Instead of simply portraying Ravana and his son Meghnad as conventional villains, he gives them heroic, tragic, and human dimensions.
The poem combines Bengali literary traditions with influences from Western epic poetry, particularly Milton's Paradise Lost.
Meghnad Badh Kavya is regarded as one of the most important works in Bengali epic poetry.
