Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California. She spent much of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage because of her mother's difficulties. Her early life was marked by instability, but she later developed an interest in modeling and acting.

In 1942, at the age of 16, she married James Dougherty. While he was serving in the South Pacific during World War II, Monroe worked in a factory in California. A photographer discovered her there, which helped begin her modeling career. By 1946, she had signed her first film contract and adopted the professional name Marilyn Monroe.

Monroe initially received small acting roles, but her career gradually expanded. Her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve in 1950 brought her greater attention. She then appeared in films including Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire, establishing herself as a major Hollywood star.

In the mid-1950s, Monroe sought more control over her career and wanted to develop her dramatic acting abilities. She moved to New York and studied acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. During this period, she took on more demanding roles, including her performances in Bus Stop and The Prince and the Showgirl.

One of her most famous films was The Seven Year Itch (1955), which included the celebrated subway-grate scene. She later starred in Some Like It Hot (1959), directed by Billy Wilder and featuring Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. The film became a major success, and Monroe received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her performance.

Monroe was married three times. She married baseball player Joe DiMaggio in 1954, although their marriage lasted only about nine months. In 1956, she married playwright Arthur Miller. Their marriage lasted until 1961, and they worked together on the film The Misfits.

Monroe's later career included Let's Make Love (1960) and The Misfits (1961). Her final completed film was The Misfits. In 1962, she began work on Something's Got to Give, but the production was left unfinished following difficulties during filming.

On August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe died at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 36. Her death was officially attributed to a drug overdose. The circumstances surrounding her death have remained the subject of public discussion and speculation, but the official determination was an overdose.

Marilyn Monroe's cultural legacy continued long after her death. Her films, photographs, performances and distinctive public image made her one of the most recognizable figures of twentieth-century popular culture. Her life has also remained the subject of biographies, documentaries, books and films.
