Maithili Sharan Gupt was born on 3 August 1886 in Chirgaon, near Jhansi in present-day Uttar Pradesh. He received much of his education at home after leaving formal schooling at a young age. He studied Hindi, Sanskrit, English, and Bengali and developed a strong interest in Indian classical and regional literature.

Gupt's literary development was strongly influenced by Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi, the influential editor of the Hindi journal Saraswati. Under Dwivedi's guidance, Gupt increasingly adopted Khari Boli Hindi for poetry at a time when Braj Bhasha was still dominant in Hindi poetic literature. His work helped establish Khari Boli as an important medium for modern Hindi poetry.

One of his earliest major works was Rang Mein Bhang, followed by Jayadrath Vadh. His landmark collection Bharat-Bharati, published in 1912, expressed themes of Indian history, society, cultural identity, and patriotism and became particularly influential during the freedom movement.

Another major work, Saket, reinterpreted the Ramayana through the story of Ayodhya and particularly brought attention to characters such as Urmila, the wife of Lakshmana. Other important works include Yashodhara, Panchavati, Kisan, Dwapar, Siddharaj, and Anagh. His writing frequently drew on the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Buddhist traditions, Indian history, and religious narratives.

Gupt's poetry was also connected with India's nationalist movement. Government of India publications describe his writing as inspiring people during the freedom struggle, while later accounts record that Mahatma Gandhi honored him with the title Rashtrakavi.

After independence, Gupt was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, where he remained a member until his death. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1954 for his contribution to Indian literature. He continued writing for decades and produced a large body of poetry, translations, and other literary works.

Maithili Sharan Gupt died on 12 December 1964. His contribution to the development of modern Hindi poetry, particularly the literary use of Khari Boli, remains an important part of the history of Hindi literature.
