Mahadev Desai
Mahadev Desai (1892–1942) was an Indian freedom fighter, writer, journalist, translator, and close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He served as Gandhi’s personal secretary and documented many important events of India’s independence movement through his writings and diaries.

Biography
Mahadev Desai
Mahadev Haribhai Desai (1 January 1892 – 15 August 1942) was an Indian freedom fighter, writer, journalist, translator, and one of the closest associates of Mahatma Gandhi. He served as Gandhi’s personal secretary for more than two decades and played an important role in documenting the Indian independence movement.
Early Life and Education
Mahadev Desai was born on 1 January 1892 in Saras village, Surat district, Gujarat, British India. He received his early education in Gujarat and later studied at Elphinstone College in Bombay. He also studied law before dedicating himself to public service and the independence movement.
Association with Mahatma Gandhi
Desai met Mahatma Gandhi in 1915 and gradually became one of his most trusted associates. In 1917, he joined Gandhi's ashram and began serving as his personal secretary.
His work involved much more than ordinary secretarial duties. He handled correspondence, translated documents, edited writings, accompanied Gandhi during political campaigns, and carefully recorded his meetings and conversations.
Role in the Freedom Movement
Mahadev Desai participated in and documented several important campaigns of India's independence struggle. He was associated with the Champaran Satyagraha, Non-Cooperation Movement, Bardoli Satyagraha, Salt Satyagraha, Civil Disobedience Movement, and the Quit India Movement.
Because of his involvement in the freedom struggle, he was imprisoned several times by the British authorities.
Writer and Journalist
Desai was a talented writer and translator. His diaries and articles provide valuable firsthand information about Gandhi's activities and the wider independence movement.
His diary writings were later published in the multi-volume work Day-to-Day with Gandhi, which remains an important historical source for researchers studying Gandhi and the Indian independence movement.
Among his other notable works are With Gandhi in Ceylon, The Story of Bardoli, and Vir Vallabhbhai.
Death
Following the launch of the Quit India Movement in August 1942, Gandhi and several of his associates were detained at the Aga Khan Palace in Pune. Mahadev Desai died there from a heart attack on 15 August 1942, at the age of 50.
Legacy
Mahadev Desai is remembered as one of Gandhi's most important associates and as a significant chronicler of India's struggle for independence. His writings and diaries provide historians with detailed accounts of Gandhi's life, political activities, and philosophy.
