Kedarnath Singh

Kedarnath Singh was born in 1934 in Chakia, Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh. He received his early education in his village and completed his higher education in Varanasi, eventually earning a master's degree in Hindi. He began writing poetry during the 1950s, and his first poem was published in the journal Samaj in 1950. His first poetry collection, Abhi Bilkul Abhi, was published in 1960.

Singh pursued an academic career alongside his literary work. He taught at Uday Pratap College in Varanasi, Saint Andrew's College in Gorakhpur, Udit Narayan College in Padrauna and Gorakhpur University. In 1976, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, where he continued teaching and literary scholarship.

His poetry developed a distinctive modern style that connected everyday experiences with broader human, social and cultural questions. The Sahitya Akademi described his poems as combining dialogue, memory, mythic consciousness and sensory perceptions, while emphasizing the significance of everyday realities and the possibilities of language.

Among his important poetry collections are Abhi Bilkul Abhi, Yahan Se Dekho, Akaal Mein Saras, Bagh, Uttar Kabir Aur Anya Kavitayen, Tolstoy Aur Cycle and Srishti Par Pahra. He also wrote important works of literary criticism, including Kalpana Aur Chhayavad and Adhunik Hindi Kavita Mein Bimb Vidhan.

Singh received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989 for Akaal Mein Saras. He was later elected a Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi in 2010, one of the institution's highest honors. His other recognitions included the Vyas Samman, Kumaran Asan Award, Bharat Bharati Puraskar, Maithilisharan Gupta Award and Dinkar Award.

In 2013, Singh was awarded the Jnanpith Award for his outstanding contribution to Indian literature in Hindi. The official Jnanpith laureate list records him as the 2013 Hindi-language recipient.

Kedarnath Singh remained active in literary and cultural life for many years. Sahitya Akademi also produced a documentary on him and held programmes celebrating his work. He died in 2018, leaving behind an influential body of Hindi poetry, criticism and scholarship.
