James Trevor Oliver was born on May 27, 1975, in Clavering, Essex, England. His interest in cooking began at a young age while helping at his parents' pub and restaurant, The Cricketers. He later attended catering college and worked at The Neal Street Restaurant, where he was mentored by chef Gennaro Contaldo. He subsequently worked at the River Café in London, where a television producer noticed him and helped launch his television career.

Oliver became a household name in 1999 when his BBC Two television series The Naked Chef introduced his informal and accessible approach to cooking. The program helped establish him as a major television chef and led to a long career spanning television, publishing, restaurants, food products, and educational projects.

He became a successful cookbook author, producing books focused on practical home cooking and a range of cuisines. According to his official biography, Oliver has sold more than 50 million books worldwide and has published 28 best-selling cookery books. His later publications have included Eat Yourself Healthy, released in September 2025.
