Harivansh Rai Bachchan

Harivansh Rai Bachchan (27 November 1907 – 18 January 2003) was a prominent Indian Hindi poet and writer. He became one of the most celebrated poets of modern Hindi literature and is particularly famous for his 1935 work Madhushala.

Early Life and Education

Harivansh Rai Bachchan was born on 27 November 1907 in Babupatti village near Allahabad, United Provinces of British India, now in Uttar Pradesh, India. His birth name was Harivansh Rai Shrivastava.

He received his early education in Allahabad and later studied English literature at Allahabad University. He also spent several years studying at the University of Cambridge, where he earned a PhD on the poetry of W. B. Yeats.

Literary Career

Bachchan began writing poetry at a young age and became associated with the Chhayavad and later modern Hindi literary movements. His poetry combined accessible language with philosophical reflections on life, death, love, suffering, and human existence.

His most famous work, Madhushala, was published in 1935. Written in a series of quatrains, the poem uses the imagery of wine, the cup, the drinker, and the tavern to explore broader ideas about life and humanity.

Other important works include Madhubala, Madhukalash, and his four-volume autobiography.

Work in Translation and Academia

Bachchan had a strong command of English and Hindi and contributed significantly to literary translation. He translated important works of English literature into Hindi, including selected works of William Shakespeare and W. B. Yeats.

He also taught English at Allahabad University and later worked for the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India, where he contributed to Hindi-language work and translation.

Personal Life

Harivansh Rai Bachchan was first married to Shyama, who died in 1936. He later married Teji Bachchan in 1941.

He was the father of actor Amitabh Bachchan and Ajitabh Bachchan. Through Amitabh, he became part of one of India's best-known literary and cultural families.

Awards and Recognition

Bachchan received several major honors for his contribution to Hindi literature. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1969 for his autobiography Do Chattanen.

He received the Padma Bhushan in 1976 for his contribution to Hindi literature.

Death

Harivansh Rai Bachchan died on 18 January 2003 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, at the age of 95.

Legacy

Harivansh Rai Bachchan remains one of the most widely remembered Hindi poets of the 20th century. Madhushala continues to be read and recited, while his poetry and autobiographical writings remain important parts of modern Hindi literature.
