Charlton Heston

Charlton Heston was born John Charles Carter on October 4, 1923, in Evanston, Illinois, United States. He became one of Hollywood's best-known actors, particularly associated with historical epics, biblical dramas, and adventure films.

Heston developed an interest in acting at an early age and performed in amateur theater before beginning his professional career. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, he returned to acting and eventually moved into television and film.

His Hollywood breakthrough came during the 1950s. He gained major attention for films such as The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), Secret of the Incas (1954), and especially The Ten Commandments (1956), in which he portrayed Moses. His powerful screen presence made him particularly suited to large-scale historical productions.

In 1959, Heston played Judah Ben-Hur in William Wyler's Ben-Hur. The film became a major cinematic success, and Heston won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.

He continued appearing in major productions throughout the 1960s, including El Cid (1961), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), and Khartoum (1966). He also appeared in Orson Welles's Touch of Evil (1958), playing Mexican narcotics officer Mike Vargas.

During the 1970s and later years, Heston continued acting in films and television. He also became increasingly active in public affairs and organized labor. In 1965, he served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, a position he held until 1971.

Heston received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy in 1978 in recognition of his humanitarian contributions.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Heston became particularly prominent for his role as president of the National Rifle Association, serving from 1998 to 2003. The Academy records his election as NRA president in June 1998.

Charlton Heston died on April 5, 2008, at his home in Beverly Hills, California, aged 84. He remains closely associated with some of the most prominent historical and biblical films of classical Hollywood.
