Early Life

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay was born on 12 September 1894 in Muratipur village, in the Jessore district of British India. The area is now in West Bengal, India.

His father, Mahananda Bandyopadhyay, was a Sanskrit scholar and storyteller. Bibhutibhushan grew up in a modest family environment, and his early experiences of rural Bengal later became an important source of inspiration for his writing.

Education

Literary Career

Bibhutibhushan began writing at a time when Bengali literature was already highly developed. His approach, however, was distinctive. He focused on ordinary people and the natural world, presenting rural Bengal with remarkable detail and emotional depth.

His first major novel, Pather Panchali, was published in book form in 1929. The novel portrays the life of a poor Bengali family and the childhood experiences of Apu and Durga.

The novel established Bibhutibhushan as a major Bengali writer.

In 1955, Satyajit Ray adapted Pather Panchali into his first feature film. The film received international acclaim and introduced Bibhutibhushan's literary world to audiences around the globe.

Aparajito

Aparajito, published in 1932, continues the story of Apu as he grows from childhood into adulthood.

The novel explores education, ambition, family relationships, personal loss, and the desire to discover the wider world. Together, Pather Panchali and Aparajito form one of the most celebrated fictional portraits of growing up in Bengali literature.

Satyajit Ray later adapted Aparajito into the second film of his Apu Trilogy.
