Sachin Dev Burman

Sachin Dev Burman was born on October 1, 1906, in Comilla, then part of British India and now in Bangladesh. He belonged to the princely family of Tripura. From an early age, he developed a strong interest in music and received training from several prominent musicians, including K. C. Dey, Bhishmadev Chattopadhyay, Ustad Badal Khan and Ustad Allauddin Khan. His musical development was shaped by both Indian classical traditions and the folk music of eastern Bengal.

Burman began his professional musical career as a singer and radio artist in Calcutta. He also recorded Bengali songs and became known for his interpretations of folk and light classical music. His early career included work in Bengali cinema, and he served as music director for Bengali films beginning in the 1930s.

In 1944, Burman moved to Bombay, where he established himself as a major composer in Hindi cinema. His early Hindi-film work included Shikari, while films such as Baazi, Jaal and Taxi Driver helped establish his distinctive musical identity. He became particularly associated with Dev Anand and Navketan Films, creating several memorable soundtracks.

Burman's musical style drew on Bengali folk melodies, Hindustani classical music and relatively restrained orchestration. His compositions were performed by leading singers including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and others. His own distinctive voice also appeared in several of his compositions, including songs from Sujata, Bandini, Guide and Aradhana.

Among his best-known films were Devdas, Pyaasa, Sujata, Bandini, Guide, Jewel Thief, Aradhana and Abhimaan. His work on Guide became particularly celebrated, while Aradhana introduced another important phase in his collaboration with singers and filmmakers.

Burman received numerous honors during his career. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for Taxi Driver and Abhimaan. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1958 and the Padma Shri in 1969. He also received National Film Awards for playback singing for Aradhana and for music direction for Zindagi Zindagi.

His personal life was also connected with music. He married Meera Dasgupta, later known as Meera Dev Burman, in 1938. Their son, Rahul Dev Burman, went on to become a prominent Hindi-film music director and composer.

Sachin Dev Burman died in Bombay on October 31, 1975, at the age of 69. His compositions remain an important part of Bengali and Hindi film music, particularly for their combination of folk traditions, classical influences and memorable melodic writing.
