**Hugh Hefner (1926–2017)** was an American magazine publisher, editor, writer, and entrepreneur best known as the founder and editor-in-chief of *Playboy* magazine. Hugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He grew up in a conservative Methodist family and attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he studied psychology and wrote for the university newspaper. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After college, Hefner worked in publishing, including as a copywriter and as a writer for Esquire. In 1953, he left his job and raised money to create his own magazine. The first issue of Playboy was published in December 1953 and featured Marilyn Monroe on its cover and centerfold.
Playboy combined photographs of women with fiction, interviews, essays, satire, and articles on culture and politics. The magazine became particularly known for interviews with prominent public figures and writers, while Hefner presented it as part of a broader philosophy concerning personal freedom, sexuality, and lifestyle.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Hefner expanded Playboy beyond publishing. The company established Playboy Clubs, which became recognizable entertainment venues, and developed television programs and other media projects.
