Updated September 17, 2026

Gopinath Bordoloi was born on 6 June 1890 at Raha in present-day Nagaon district, Assam. He studied at Scottish Church College in Calcutta and later completed postgraduate studies at the University of Calcutta. He also qualified in law and began his professional life as a lawyer and teacher.

Bordoloi became involved in India's freedom movement and joined the Indian National Congress. He participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement and subsequently became an important political figure in Assam. In 1932, he was elected chairman of the Gauhati Municipal Board. His political career developed during a period when questions concerning Assam's political status and relationship with the rest of India were major issues.

Bordoloi served as Assam's Premier during the late colonial period and later became the first Chief Minister of Assam after independence. The Assam government's official records list his chief-ministerial tenure from 11 February 1946 to 6 August 1950.

During the period surrounding India's independence and Partition, Bordoloi was involved in political efforts concerning the future of Assam. Government of Assam historical material credits him with playing an important role in keeping Assam within India during the negotiations and political developments of that period.

As head of the Assam government, Bordoloi was associated with the development of important educational and public institutions. Government sources highlight his role in the establishment of Gauhati University and the Gauhati High Court, while the development of medical education in Assam was also advanced during his period of leadership.

Bordoloi also advocated protections for the interests and land rights of tribal communities in Northeast India. Government of Assam material describes him as an architect associated with the Sixth Schedule framework, which provided constitutional safeguards for certain tribal areas of the region.

Gopinath Bordoloi died on 6 August 1950. Decades after his death, the Government of India awarded him the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1999. He remains an important figure in the political and freedom-movement history of Assam, and a memorial museum at his birthplace in Raha preserves personal objects associated with his life.
